Students recently visited Monash University’s Clayton campus and the MUMA Gallery to experience the exhibition Syncretic Wilds: Phasmahammer and Natasha Tontey. Through mixed media works including costume, video, sculpture and multi-part installations, the exhibition explored Southeast Asian storytelling and the complex relationship between humans and the natural world.
As part of the experience, students participated in an eco-dyeing workshop with artist Raf McDonald, exploring the concept of 'the exquisite line'. They created a series of hand-dyed artworks that will be combined into a collaborative class piece to be exhibited at this year’s Art Show.
Students left the experience inspired by the expressive possibilities of textiles and the ways fabric, like painting and drawing, can be used to communicate ideas and stories. It was a creative and inspiring day for all, and we look forward to sharing their work with you at the Art Show in October!
